TS-DF measurement (Time Stamp Delay Factor) (French and English document) In our Broadcast industry, the advent of IP transport requires to adapt to new techniques and to become familiar with new indicators. The IP has a long life and measurement techniques too. However, new algorithms had to be developed in order to adapt to Broadcast. It is in this context appears now the TS-DF indicator that measures the jitter of a network and its cumulative effect over time.

The MD5 code – How it works (French and English document) MD5 acronym is very often used in the telecommunication industry since it became a generic term similar to an Escalator or a Frigidaire. But it is less known what is hidden behind these letters. Following the polynomial calculations of last month, here is a paper introducing the basics of this system and how to use it in the Aurora file-based QC solution.

Video on optical fiber measurement (French and English document) Because optical connection solutions are easier to use and manipulate, they are becoming increasingly popular in the broadcast industry. Nevertheless, when a difficulty occurs in deploying the solution, it is useful to have an equipment able to check the main parameters of the transmission path. This is precisely what the SFP option of the WFM2300 does and here are some tricks on how to use it appropriately.

UHD-4K SQD vs 2SI The Video industry is always trying to improve its level of quality. In this context, 4K UHD is now coming to our TV sets and the best example will be the next world cup in Russia in June that will be covered in 4K in all the stadiums and broadcasted to each country in its native format. 4K UHD requires 8 times more bandwidth than a regular HD signal. It means that 12Mbps are needed. If we remember the difficulties faced moving from SD-SDI (270Mbps) to HD-SDI (1,485Mbps), dealing with 12Gbps SDI could be considered as quite a challenge. Fortunately, for those now wanting to take any risk, some tips exist allowing well-known process, and a lot of broadcasters are using the 4 links 3Gbps technique. So, the signal is divided in 4 equal parts and transported on 4 different coaxial cables. Two modes exist for splitting the pixels, each of one with advantages and disadvantages.

Protocole IGMP IGMP is now implemented in measurement tools for monitoring the IP-based baseband video streams. This technique is widely used in the networking world and a short explanation about this subject seems today necessary for our broadcast industry, often unfamiliar with this type of protocol.

NMOS IS-04 As our industry moves away from hard wired systems towards flexible IP based architectures, international standardization entities (like SMPTE or AES) have worked on specifications to stream live content on IP packets (ST2110). But they have not really worked about interconnection and interoperability: How for instance to know what is in a system or how to simply connect a camera to a monitor in this environment ? Facing this context, AMWA has created an open working group named NMOS to work on these subjects. The first published specification (IS-04) enables applications to discover networked resources, which is an important first step towards automation and scalability. Tektronix being one of the active members of this group, IS-04 is already implemented in the Prism to facilitate the network connectivity.

Stop Display The introduction of HDR cameras on the market adds to the difficulty to measure images and this is particularly the case if an operator has to adjust a mix of SDR and HDR cameras. Moving from one to the other, it will be extremely difficult for him to align the white levels similarly on the two types of cameras. The trick of the Stop display is that the waveform is no longer linear in millivolt, but logarithmic by setting the 0 (corresponding to the 80% white level) in the center of the screen, and that that scale will work for SDR or HDR cameras.
